I was making paintings for a show at the very hottest time of the year. Working in my studio from 11 am to 11 pm, I listened to NPR until the programming repeated itself. The days were punctuated by a short break for lunch - often grilled cheese sandwiches from a shop obsessed with Wisconsin, and a dinner of something organic and microwaveable in the studio. Otherwise I drank endless cups of tea and sat on a cheap plastic chair or stooped around the giant steel worktable, cramping my hand and holding my breath to guided the #00 brush that filled in the shapes in the paintings, learning about the latest Bush-era embarrassments from the radio. When I got home I would have a bowl of Tom and Jerry's Phish Food ice cream or a glass of white wine and some junk tv before falling into a dead sleep, despite the heat, to wake up and do it all over again.
[... NPR is indeed a public broadcasting station with no advertising - it is National Public Radio, and the station I listened to was an all news and commentary station (they have other more music oriented ones too).]
